The “Finger” that points to the Moon: On Mediology—A Conceptualization starting from Régis Debray

Friday, 21st March 2025, 12:30pm (HKT) at CVA 1022 and on Zoom

Using the “finger” to point at the “moon” is intended to look at the moon; focusing on the “finger” instead of the “moon” is foolish. Régis Debray believes that media scholars should be such “foolish” individuals. Previous research has ignored that the “finger” lies between “looking” and the “moon,” influencing how one “looks” at the moon. Mediology aims to take a contrary approach by revealing the “finger” and its role, demonstrating the inseparability of material and symbolic aspects, and the unity of technology and culture. This approach breaks down the barriers of the technology-culture dichotomy, providing new perspectives and interpretations for the history of human civilization. The “finger” pointing at the moon is both a material entity and an operation; different dominant “fingers” lead to different operations and conditions. Therefore, as a combined effect of the tangible and intangible, position and function, media not only constrain how culture is transmitted and displayed, shaping specific cultural climates and environments, but also form different social civilizations. Based on this, Chinese mediology should not only focus on the impact of media operations on cultural transmission but also on the influence of media on human perception. It should pay attention to what new realities media create, what new living experiences and ways they bring to people. In short, it should examine both the “finger,” focusing on its the operation, and the “moon,” examining what is formed, what impact it has, and what different “moons” it presents.
