A Double Book Talk on Chinese Wolf Warrior Diplomacy and Reporting Sexual Violence in Greater China

Friday, 21st February 2025, 12:30pm (HKT) at CVA 1022 and on Zoom

Wolf Warrior Diplomacy and China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs: From Policy to Podium (2024) delves into the transformation of Chinese foreign policy from Mao Zedong to Xi Jinping, exploring how domestic shifts and global power dynamics have shaped the aggressive diplomacy of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). It reveals how Xi Jinping’s era ushered in a new wave of “Wolf Warrior” diplomats tasked with asserting China’s confidence and proactive stance on the global stage. The book provides a nuanced understanding of the evolution of CCP diplomatic language and its reception, particularly in the Global South, through advanced computational analysis of press conferences, speeches, and government statements. This work is essential for scholars of communication, international relations, and Chinese foreign policy.

Reporting Sexual Violence and #MeToo in Asia: The View from Hong Kong, Mainland China, and Taiwan (2025) examines how media systems in these three culturally similar but politically distinct societies have shaped public discourse on sexual violence and #MeToo. The book analyzes how journalistic coverage of rape cases and social movements influences cyber activism, cultural narratives, and activist strategies. It highlights the complexities of news production, the constraints of reporting on sexual violence, and the transformative potential of social media as a tool for activism and survivor support. Offering insights into practical strategies for engagement and action, the book provides a roadmap for fostering more empathetic and impactful reporting on sexual violence in diverse contexts.
