Platforms Regulation and Free Speech Controversy in Europe

Friday, 8 April 2022, 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Zoom

Moderation on social media has generated intense controversy in recent years. Faced with pressure by European states for more effective regulation of content, the major platforms have undertaken a reform of their moderation policies. Based on the examples of YouTube and Facebook, this communication will focus on two specific aspects of this reform : the automation of moderation and the practice of shadow banning, through their impact on the exercise of free speech online.

ROMAIN BADOUARD is Associate Professor at the Université Paris Panthéon-Assas. His research works mainly address content regulation on social media. His latest book is Les nouvelles lois du web. Modération et censure (2020, Le Seuil Editions).
