Personal reflection, in the style of what C. Wright Mills calls “sociological imagination,” on my 43 years of academic career, with topics ranging from ties between personal interest and social issues, the global-historical nexus, development of intellectual taste and visions, cultivation of technical competence, to encounters with “giants” in the field, institution building, academic publishing, and supervision of doctoral students.
CHIN-CHUAN LEE is a Yushan Chair Professor of Communication, National Chengchi University in Taiwan; Professor Emeritus, University of Minnesota; Emeritus Professor, City University of Hong Kong; elected Fellow of the International Communication Association (ICA) and Winner of its Audrey Fisher Mentorship Award. Has published a trilogy on international communication since retirement: 《傳播縱橫:歷史脈絡與全球視野》(Crisscrossing Communication Research: Historical Contexts and Global Perspectives, 2019),《“國際傳播”國際化》(Internationalizing “International Communication,” 2022),《新聞自由的幽靈》(The Specter of Press Freedom, 2022).
