Infodemic and Responsible Communication

Thursday, 14 November 2024, 3:30pm HKT at CVA 1022 and on Zoom

Infodemic refers to the rapid and widespread spread of accurate and inaccurate information, especially through digital platforms. The term was popularized during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it is applicable to any situation where critical and timely information is needed, and there’s a surge of information, including rumours, fake news, conspiracy theories, and half-truths. Responsible communication plays a critical role in managing the impact of an infodemic. It refers to the deliberate practice of sharing clear, accurate, and timely information, especially during times of crisis, to increase public understanding and guide the public toward informed decision-making. Responsible communication also plays a vital role in building trust and promoting media literacy, thus empowering individuals to critically assess the information they consume. Research implications are provided.
