Motivations and Challenges in Participating in Work-integrated Learning: The Industry Partner Perspectives

Thursday, 27th February 2025, 12:30pm (HKT) at CVA 1022 and on Zoom

Many vocational education and training programs are enthusiastic to recruit industry employers to provide workplace exposure and work-integrated learning opportunities. However, low industry motivation to participate has sometimes posed an issue. In this study, we examine what motivates companies to participate as an industry partner and the perceived challenges in participating. A qualitative interview study was conducted among 15 current and potential industry partners. Results indicated that the main motivations and perceived benefits of serving as industry partners were attracting talent, giving back to society, enhancing company reputation, and promoting corporate learning. Other considerations included the reputation of the educational institutions, existing partners, level of commitment, and how much of a contribution the partner could make. Employee turnover of industry partners and communication between partners and education providers were perceived as challenges. Recommendations informing vocational education programs’ efforts to initiate, maintain, and strengthen industry engagement were proposed.
